Pulmonaria - Looking Good this Month

Pulmonaria have a number of common names - Soldiers and Sailors which allude to the colour of their flowers blue and red, Lungwort because of the spotting on the leaves and Jerusalem Cowslip - but whichever name you choose they are excellent garden plants, hardy and reliable.
They are always one of the first to flower in late winter and will continue to put up flowers well into spring. The flowers come in a range of colours from the traditional blue which turns pink with age, the very soft pink, an electric blue and white.

They prefer to grow in the shade in a moisture retentive soil, particularly the varieties with more white on their leaves, but some are quite tolerant of a semi-sunny site. After flowering in late spring the leaves can sometimes look a bit tatty and it is fine to cut them hard back and just a couple of so weeks later a fresh crop will have grown. The leaves them selves are a good decorative feature.

We particularly like the lighter flowered varieties like 'Ice Ballet' and 'Opal'; when they are planted in a darker corner of the garden the flowers really stand out and brighten the area.
