 Chamomile Lawns

Above: a tray of lawn chamomile ready for dispatch

Lawn Chamomile or Chamaemelum nobile 'Treneague' is a non-flowering herb which makes a fragrant, evergreen carpet. The finely divided leaves create a feathery appearance and release a strong apple-like scent when bruised or trodden on. Chamomile plants grow as small rosettes sending out side-shoots which in turn form rosettes and join up creating a lawn.
Chamomile 'Treneague' was discovered growing in a clump of flowering chamomile plants at Higher Treneague Farm just outside the town of Wadebridge in Cornwall in 1950's. Since then it has been widely propagated by divisions and cuttings ( no flowers so no seeds!) and planted all over the world. In smaller gardens a chamomile lawn makes a superb grass substitute except in areas of heavy use or where children play. It does not need mowing. For larger gardens a chamomile walkway or path looks and smells wonderful. And if you just have a 'pockethandkerchief', chamomile grows well in pots - on its own or as a ground cover to a taller plant, or plant it amongst the flags of your patio.

Cultivation and Growing
It is easy to grow in ordinary garden soil provided it is reasonably free draining and not too stony and is in sun for most of the day. It is best not planted in with grass because the grass will win and ultimately replace the chamomile. Also it is worthwhile making sure that the ground is free from all perennial weeds before planting.
We recommend planting the chamomile rosettes at 6" (15cm.) spacing. If planted in the Spring the ground should be completely covered by the Autumn. Later planting, up to the end of September for most of the UK, is fine but the earth will not be completely covered in that growing season.
Chamomile is not a greedy feeder but every couple of years a top dressing of a general fertiliser in the Spring is recommended to keep the plants in top condition. If the ground becomes packed by walking a very gentle loosening of the soil with a fork helps the new side-shoots to root.

We grow lawn chamomile in 2 litre pots and also in larger trays. These trays contain 80 plantlets ready for planting out and are grown to order. It takes five to six weeks from ordering to delivery of these trays. The cost per tray is £20.00 plus carriage.
